Arequipa

Description

Travel day to Arequipa

Lodging

Hampton by Hilton Arequipa

Details

We took our last walk around the beautiful Corto Maltes grounds before saying good-bye to our guide Franklin. Then we took the boat back to Puerto Maldonado and a van to the airport. We flew to Lima where we had a great lunch - I don't think you can get a bad meal in Peru!

Then we flew on to Arequipa. Our driver told us about this interesting place. It's the second largest city in Peru with a population over 1.5 million. It was founded by the Spaniards (actually by Pizarro's partner, Almagre) in the 1500's. It is surrounded by volcanoes and the inhabitants feel tremors often although "they don't think about it". The volcanic soil is extremely rich and agriculture is a top industry along with mineral mining (gold and silver - remember all that gold the Spaniards stole).

Our hotel was very comfortable and well located, with a beautiful old courtyard and we had dinner there. We had a shock when we started to unpack... Froggy had stowed away in Kevin's bag! This made us very sad because he had left paradise by mistake. There wasn't much we could do so Kevin took him down to the courtyard lobby and put him in a planter. Vaya con Dios Froggy!
